The Storefront Project
FREE Creative Writing Workshops and One-on-One Tutoring!
Fall Schedule Starts with "How to Write a Novel"
The Storefront Project is an exciting new initiative of The Nature of Words, guided by NOW Board member and project coordinator Margi Heater. Taking a page from David Eggers’ 826 Valencia concept in San Francisco, which is now in urban centers nationwide, NOW’s Storefront Project offers theme-based creative writing workshops and one-on-one tutoring on a drop-in basis at no charge on Monday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., with special programs offered on Saturday. In addition, field trips can be arranged whereby classrooms visit the Storefront during school hours for creative writing instruction. The meeting space is in The Nature of Words Literary Arts Center, 224 NW Oregon Avenue in downtown Bend (across the street from The Pine Tavern). To participate, students can drop in between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. on any Monday or Thursday. The summer schedule continues through August with a focus on fiction writing, and workshops are at the same time as before - 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.!
Fall Schedule Theme - Heroes and Fools
September: "How to Write a Novel" with instructor Helen Vandervort. Helen has written and published two novels.
October: Poetry, specializing in humor and performance, with instructor Cassie Moore.
November: Poetry writing, with instructor John Mounts, who has also taught in Words Without Walls, The Nature of Words' creative-writing-in-the-schools program.
December: Year-end break, with workshops resuming in January.
Workshops are theme-based to help inspire young writers, and limited to 15 students. Volunteers and/or paid author instructors and staff will be on hand to lead the workshops or conduct the one-on-one sessions using the NOW Creative-Writing-in-the-Schools curriculum as a guide.
Students can get to NOW's workshops in its literary arts center via the City of Bend’s bus transit system (BAT), making it readily accessible for students not living close to downtown. The Storefront Project attracts 7th through 12th grade students enrolled in traditional and non-traditional educational settings, with a shared interest in improving their creative writing and language arts skills.
Teachers are encouraged to notify their students of this opportunity and how to enroll, and to stay tuned for updates and activities at The Storefront Project at The Nature of Words.
