About Us

The mission of The Nature of Words is to foster an appreciation of the literary arts and humanities in the high desert region of the Northwest through community interaction with acclaimed authors, and through creative writing programs for students and adults.

The Nature of Words' programs include:

  • Annual literary festival in November featuring eight to ten acclaimed authors in readings, signings, lectures, panels, workshops and a gala dinner.
  • Words Without Walls - NOW's creative-writing-in-the-schools program
  • The Storefront Project - offering drop-in creative writing workshops at no charge to middle- and high-schoolers, as well as specialty classes for adults, class field trips and Make-A-Book parties
  • Weekend of Words - Friday and Saturday short form workshops for ages 5-14 that culminate in a take-home book written and illustrated by the participants.
  • Rising Star Creative Writing Competition - honoring emerging writers ages 15-25+.
  • SpeakNOW - annual spoken word competition for area high school students.
